Janet Jackson Through the Decades

Janet Jackson first gained fame in the ’80s thanks to a fearless approach to her music, choreography, and fashion choices. Her bold and daring take on her art form has been an inspiration for many across the globe. And now, on May 20th, her hard work and dedication will be recognized with a Billboard Icon Award. Her name will be added to a list of other recipients of the award, which includes music heavy hitters like Cher, Jennifer Lopez, and Prince.

To celebrate and prepare for Miss Jackson’s first televised appearance in 9 years, we’ve compiled a list of some of her most memorable musical contributions through the last decades.

1986 – “When I Think Of You”

Janet Jackson was just 20 years-old when this song hit the number one single spot on Billboard’s Hot 100. Thanks to this, she became the youngest artist to top the chart since Stevie Wonder gained that achievement in 1963 at just 13 years-old.

1986 – “What Have You Done For Me Lately”

You may notice this as her first single from the album “Control“, which got her a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song. Watch her perform of this song at the 29th Annual Grammy Awards in 1987 here:

1989 – “Miss You Much”

Janet Jackson’s fashion took a turn towards dark military-inspired ensembles towards the end of the ’80s, and for that, the music industry was thankful. You can see her inspiration through the fashion of J-Lo, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears. “Miss You Much” became the first platinum single in 1989 and it was the longest-running number one that year.

1993 – “That’s The Way Love Goes”

This was Janet Jackson’s first platinum single, but was her 4th time on the number one spot for Billboard’s Hot 100. More than that, the song earned her a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song and is still thought by many to be the quintessential example of ’90s R&B.

2000 – “All For You”

Leading the new century with a fierce hit, she reached her tenth time on the Billboard Hot 100 list and remained there for seven weeks longer than any other song that year. It also earned her a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
