About Last Night: Highlights of the 2019 Country Music Awards

Did you miss the 2019 Country Music Awards last night? Don’t worry, here’s everything you need to know:

Tribute to Women

The 53rd Country Music Awards (CMAs) started strong with a tribute to women in country music. Loretta Lynn, at 87 years of age, sat in the audience with a smile on her face as a dozen country legends took to the stage. Tanya Tucker, Crystal Gayle, Gretchen Wilson, Jennifer Nettles, Maron Morris, Sara Evans, Martina McBride, and more belted out one glorious hit after another. The fans went wild for this history-making performance.

Terrific Trio of Hosts

Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley have been hosting the CMAs for the past decade. This year, Paisley sat it out to make room for Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. They joined Underwood on the Bridgestone Arena stage in an endless array of costume changes. Following a beautiful rendition of “Those Memories of You”, they spent a few minutes poking fun at one another in the opening monologue. The highlight was when Underwood started teasing Dolly about her rack.

Winners of the 2019 CMA Awards

The biggest stars of country music gathered together in Nashville, Tennessee, to pay homage to the best country music of the past year. Garth Brooks went home with the trophy for Entertainer of the Year, for the seventh time. The best single went to Blake Shelton for “God’s Country”Brooks and Shelton performed a rowdy rendition of “Dive Bar.”

An emotional Maren Morris accepted the honor of Album of the Year for “Girl”, as she honored her late producer, Busbee. Kacey Musgraves won for female vocalist of the year. She also took home a trophy for best music video for “Rainbow.” Ashley McBryde won new artist of the year. Last year’s CMA best new artist, Luke Combs, was a big winner with “Beautiful Crazy.” He won male vocalist of the year and song of the year.

The lovers, the dreamers, and me

Willie Nelson still has it at 86 years of age. He wooed the crowd, with a little help from Kacey Musgraves, singing “Rainbow Connection.” The audience wiped their eyes as they witnessed one of the greatest legends of country music perform, for what may well be, his last time.
