Barney Swan learned at a young age what others never learn in a lifetime: our lifestyle is not sustainable. Raised off-grid in Far North Queensland, Australia, the British national quickly discovered the value of energy and basic infrastructure. Today, he’s partnered with his father, explorer Robert Swan, in a monumental undertaking: to clean up 326 million tons of CO2 in just seven years, a number which represents the current population of the United States.
The project, called the ClimateForce Challenge, began with Robert Swan’s organization, 2041. Swan envisioned a company that would work to protect Earth’s natural resources and bring environmentally conscious individuals together. On January 15, 2018, Robert and Barney proved that clean energy can be a worldwide reality by completing an expedition to the South Pole powered entirely by renewable energy. Bolstered by their success, Barney Swan committed himself to the ClimateForce Challenge.
Swan believes that in order to make the United Nation’s Paris Agreement goals a reality, we must all take steps to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. His plan tackles the issue from two sides: our lifestyles and our infrastructure. Here are some things you can change in your daily life to reduce CO2, according to Swan’s plan.
LIFESTYLE AREAS
Transportation: Change our driving style and support green transportation. That means carpooling, taking public transportation, and telecommuting where possible.
Food/Waste: Embrace the ideas of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Community: Adopt green and energy efficient appliances. Implement renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and hydro in homes and businesses.
INFRASTRUCTURE
Carbon Clean Up: Plant trees in communities and yards.
Renewables: Get involved in politics about energy policy. Attend town halls, contact your representatives, and voice your opinions. Volunteer with renewable energy groups if you can.
Legislation: Vote for elected officials who support renewable energy. Show your support for candidates with progressive energy policies. Support the researchers and entrepreneurs, like Barney and his father, who are working towards a brighter future for us all.
