Being a creative sure isn’t easy. Battling the constant chaos of brilliant new ideas while juggling a myriad of half-finished projects can be overwhelming, to say the least. And sometimes, in the middle of it all, it feels like our creative juices have suddenly stopped flowing and we smash our noses against a brick wall that we didn’t know was there. In these situations, it helps to remember that the block may not always be coming from inside. A simple evaluation and rearranging of our work space can make all the difference. Below are three tips for developing an inspiring work environment.
1. Organize your workspace. I know. The word “organize” does not generally sit well with creative minds. We want to let our imagination run wild without having to make sure we are always putting things back in the right place. However, an organized workspace will contribute to creativity, not take away from it. Reduce the clutter and start fresh.
2. Incorporate nature into your work space. This is absolutely essential for inspiring creativity. Natural light is a must. Choose a space with windows to let in the sunshine while you work! Also, make sure the windows that can be opened so you can breathe fresh air. Our San Francisco office is full of large windows that let in the, eh hem, city sunshine in. That is, when Karl the Fog clears. It is a great idea to get a plant, or even a desktop waterfall. We are still looking for a name for our office plant, suggestions welcome! By surrounding yourself with nature, you allow your mind to reach its creative peak.
3. Let your work space reflect yourself. Your work space should be an extension of who you are, and you will feel the most comfortable and inspired if you can see your own creativity around you. If you like bright colors, incorporate them into your environment! If you enjoy a particular hobby, let that determine the theme for your work space. Let yourself and everyone else know how awesome you are!
Creating a work environment that is comfortable and conducive to creativity is not just important, it’s fun! So what are you waiting for? You won’t believe the difference that it will make in your work!
